Tooth extractions are the process of removing a tooth and may be necessary for many different reasons. It’s important to be aware of any problems occurring with your teeth or mouth and to notify your dentist before it turns into a larger issue later on. Here are some of the reasons a tooth may need to be removed:tooth extractions, reno nv dentist

  • Infection of the tooth or surrounding area
  • Having an over-crowded mouth
  • Causing damage to adjacent teeth
  • Having a loose or broken tooth
  • Experiencing pain
  • Having tooth decay
  • The growth of tumors

Preparing for a Tooth Extraction

A dentist will need to take an X-ray of your tooth before the procedure. If you take any prescribed medications, vitamins, supplements, or over-the-counter drugs, you will need to let your dentist know. It’s also important to tell them of any existing or new medical conditions that may affect the procedure. Some of these medical conditions include:

  • Congenital heart defect
  • Diabetes
  • Liver or thyroid disease
  • Hypertension
  • Damaged heart valves,
  • Impaired immune system

What to Expect During the Procedure

The doctor will begin with an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. In some cases, the doctor may use a stronger general anesthetic. Both the local and general anesthetics will prevent pain, but a general anesthetic will also ensure that the patient sleeps through the procedure. This may be necessary if surgical incisions need to be made.

If the tooth is visible then a simple extraction will be performed. During this procedure, a tool called an elevator is used to loosen the tooth, and then forceps are used to grab the tooth. The doctor will then gently rock the tooth back and forth until the tooth releases from the jawbone and ligaments that hold the tooth in place.

If the tooth is impacted (not visible), then an oral surgeon will need to surgically cut away gum and bone tissue that covers the tooth. Once the tooth is exposed, the doctor can then use the forceps to rock the tooth back and forth until it loosens enough to be completely removed. The spot where the tooth was removed will then be sewn back up.

In some cases, a tooth that is more difficult to pull may need to be removed in pieces.

The Recovery Process

It takes a few days to fully recover from a tooth extraction. Your mouth will be very sore and tender and you’ll have to stick to soft foods for a while. It’s important to get lots of rest and avoid jumping straight in to your normal routine. Before you leave the office, your dentist will give you  a list of things to do to help with the pain and healing of your mouth, and will also tell you what to avoid doing while you recover.
